INTERVIEW: Amit Singh on discovering Slovakia with a scholarship!

DISCOVERING SLOVAKIA WITH THE NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

My name is Amit Singh.
I am a PhD student in Human Rights at the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, Portugal. I am originally from India, but now Portugal is my home. I have three master’s degrees and have travelled through more than 40 countries. It was one of my best academic decisions to apply for a national scholarship in Slovakia.

It opened a new academic door for me in Slovakia. I was awarded the Slovak National Scholarship in 2023 for the duration of eight months to conduct part of my PhD research as a National Scholarship Programme scholar at the Institute of European Studies and International Relations, Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava.

My research focuses on the conflict between freedom of expression and religion in India. However, in Slovakia, I am conducting a comparative study between right-wing Hindu nationalism and Slovak nationalism. Under the supervision of Professor Oľga Gyárfášová, I intend to publish an article. I decided to come to Comenius University and work with Professor Oľga because they are both among the best of the best in Slovakia. During my research stay, I gave lectures on the issue of Indian political cultures, and presented my paper in research seminar at Comenius University. One of the best things about being a visiting scholar is sharing my research with others, getting feedback, and learning about the latest theories. The experience gained in Slovakia is extremely valuable and enriching. And I am grateful to SAIA for sponsoring my research.

SLOVAKIA - UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

In Slovakia, I got the cheapest government-funded student dorm. Only 69 euros per month. In addition, there is free public health insurance for NSP scholarship holders. This is really amazing!

I was able to travel to neighbouring countries; that's the beauty of Slovakia. You can travel to many other countries and learn about other cultures without spending a lot of money. I find the people in Slovakia to be extremely friendly and always willing to help. The historical buildings and natural beauty of Slovakia are just amazing! The boat trip on the Danube was great!

Slovak government and SAIA do a great job of supporting foreign scholars. Knowledge and research exchange within the framework of the NSP is of great benefit to emerging scholars. I must admit that the NSP has given me a great opportunity to connect with top scholars, experts, universities and organizations. Moreover, I had a unique opportunity to get acquainted with Slovak culture and its warm hospitality. I think Slovakia is a great educational hub in Central Europe.
